Associate Professor
Bálint SOMLYÓ is an associate professor in aesthetics. Originally studied biology and aesthetics, he earned his PhD in aesthetics with a thesis on Arnold Gehlen’s anthropology and its possible influence on art theory; he got his Habilitation degree in 2015 at ELTE. He taught aesthetics at the University of Pécs for eighteen years, was among the founders of the Department of Aesthetics there and finally Head of Department from 1997 up to 2003. Since 2002 he has been teaching at ELTE, between 2016 and 2020 he was Head of the Department of Aesthetics. His main interest is in 20th century philosophy of art concentrating on Walter Benjamin.
