Angol és ógörög szakon végzett, 1993-ban D.E.A. fokozatot (EHESS, Párizs), 2001-ben PhD fokozatot szerzett filozófiából az ELTE-n.
1997-től tanít az ELTE Esztétika és az Ógörög tanszékein. Kutatási területe: antik filozófia- és esztétikatörténet, eszmetörténet, recepciótörténet.
Az Atlantisz Könyvkiadó új Platón-sorozatának egyik szerkesztője.

Istvan Barany studied English and Classics at the Eötvös Loránd University in Budapest, then earned first a D.E.A. at the EHESS in Paris, then a Ph.D. in Ancient Philosophy at ELTE/EHESS.
He has been teaching at ELTE both at the Department of Aesthetics (since 1997) and at the the Greek Department (since 2015, keeping an affiliation with the Department of Aesthetics).
His research and teaching interests include Ancient Greek philosophy, aesthetic theory and intellectual history.
He has translated and edited a number of volumes (among others: Theaetetus, Protagoras, Parmenides, Republic, Phaedo) for the Complete works of Plato with notes and commentaries (Atlantisz Books, 1998-). Currently he is working on the last volume of the series (Timaeus, Critias).
